St Andrew's College Presents the 175 Keystone

The Boarder Promise

St Andrew’s College  – A Home Away from Home

At St Andrew’s College, boarding is not simply a place to sleep—it is a sanctuary of growth, belonging, and transformation. For over 170 years, our boarder houses have shaped young men into leaders of character, courage and compassion who go on to make positive contributions in their worlds.

Today, we reaffirm our promise to parents: to provide a safe, nurturing and inspiring environment where young Andreans can flourish—academically, emotionally and spiritually.

We believe that spaces shape behaviour and well-being. The way boys live, interact and reflect is deeply influenced by their surroundings. That’s why our boarding programme is designed to feel like home—termly boarding that offers warmth, structure and belonging.

Our future facilities will offer greater variation in layout and configuration, allowing for deeper connection across age groups and smaller social hubs for rest, reflection and friendship.

OUR KEY COMMITTMENTS
A Safe and Secure Environment
Every Andrean’s safety is our highest priority. We maintain secure, well-supervised houses with trained staff, smart systems and clear protocols to ensure every boy feels protected and at ease.

A Comfortable and Homely Place
We are investing in modern, sustainable spaces—private rooms, quiet zones and flexible layouts that respect privacy while encouraging community. These are places where boys can relax, study and feel truly at home.

Belonging & Brotherhood
Each of our houses has its own character, yet all share a common goal: to foster community. Through sensible routines, clear expectations, shared meals and caring staff, we help boys build friendships across grades and backgrounds. Our evolving spaces will support both group connection and individual retreat. Day boarders are welcomed in the daily life of the boarding houses, with dedicated spaces to make these boys feel at home.

Wellbeing & Growth
We care deeply about each boy’s emotional, mental and physical wellbeing. Our staff offer mentoring and pastoral care, and boys have access to counselling, wellness hubs and quiet spaces for reflection. We nurture resilience, leadership and personal responsibility—qualities that last a lifetime. The spaces we create in each house  accentuate these.

Learning & Independence
Academic excellence matters—but so does character. We encourage boys to take ownership of their learning in an environment that celebrates diversity, individuality and lifelong curiosity. Personalised support, digital integration and flexible learning spaces help each boy thrive.

OUR EVOLVING SPACES
We are creating 21st century boarder houses that reflect both tradition and innovation. Our historic buildings will remain central to our identity, while new interior upgrades and outdoor zones will bring increased levels of comfort, sustainability and flexibility.

Key Features Include:

  • Spacious bedrooms and grade-specific bathrooms
  • Common rooms and study areas for collaboration and conversation
  • Outdoor and recreational zones for play and pause
  • Quiet spaces for prayer, reflection or personal time
  • Resource-efficient technology for a sustainable future
  • Configurable layouts to support both group connection and individual retreat

Staff Who Care
Each house is led by a dedicated team—Housemaster, Deputy, Matron and Student Interns—who know the boys well and care deeply for their wellbeing. Ongoing training ensures our pastoral care remains exceptional. Our staff serve not only as supervisors but as mentors, modelling empathy, integrity and servant leadership. House culture and individual growth is built on strong relationships between staff and boys, and between boys of all ages. We are a relatively small school of fewer than 500 pupils, so here everyone will know your name.

Staying Connected
Open communication between the school and families is fundamental. Through real-time updates, meetings and feedback, we keep parents and guardians abreast of their son’s journey and growth. Together, we form a triangle of support—school, home and boy—working in partnership to ensure every boy flourishes.

Our Shared Vision
Boarding at St Andrew’s College has always been remarkable—we would not have thrived for over 170 years if it were not so. We recognise that we cannot rest on success of the past and our 175th Anniversary in 2030 gives us the perfect chronology for a reimagination of boarding at St Andrew’s College.

In this ‘Boarder Promise’, we are building a boarding experience that feels even more like home—a place where boys are known, supported and inspired. As we look to the future, we remain committed to evolving our spaces and practices so that every boy can flourish—academically, personally and spiritually.

This is a place of earthy excellence—a quiet strength drawn from the soil and soul of the Eastern Cape, shaped by its people, its rhythms and its enduring spirit. Here, every boy will not only find belonging—he will become part of something timeless, more so than ever before.
