St Andrew's College Presents the 175 Keystone

The Sporting Promise

Honouring Heritage | Inspiring Excellence | Expanding Opportunity

In an increasingly sedentary world, where screens and schedules often keep boys indoors and disconnected, sport at St Andrew’s College calls them out—into open spaces, into movement, into life. We believe in the power of physical activity not just to strengthen the body, but to lift the spirit, sharpen the mind and restore emotional balance. Our fields, courts and natural landscapes are more than facilities—they are places where boys breathe deeply, find rhythm and flourish.

As we approach our 175th anniversary, we reaffirm our commitment to nurturing good men who embody resilience, humility and joy. Our Sporting Promise is a bold vision for the future—one that honours our legacy while expanding horizons for every boy.

  1. Transforming Excellence: A Vision for 2030

We are reimagining our sporting facilities to meet the needs of the next generation. By 2030, we aim to create a campus that inspires boys to lead, compete and grow—physically, emotionally and socially. This is not just about infrastructure; it is about shaping environments that support health, wellness and belonging.

Our upgraded facilities will reflect the belief that space shapes behaviour. Thoughtfully designed interiors—calm, ordered and energising—will foster discipline, focus and pride. Outdoor zones—fields, courts and natural landscapes—will offer room to breathe, move and connect with the land. These spaces will be inclusive, flexible and responsive to the rhythms of school life.

  1. Our Heritage, Our Future

For generations, Andrean sportsmen have ‘punched above their weight’—competing with heart, grit and grace. This legacy is not measured in trophies alone, but in the character forged through early mornings, shared victories and hard-fought defeats.

We honour the spirit of the Eastern Cape: its quiet strength, its deep sense of belonging and its unwavering commitment to community. Our sports programme will continue to cultivate values that endure—teamwork, fairness, perseverance and joy in the game.

  1. Expanding Horizons

We are committed to broadening access and deepening engagement. Sport must be a place where every boy finds his stride—whether in the first team or in a social league, whether in traditional codes or emerging disciplines.

SPORT – COMPETITION AND COMMUNITY
Our comprehensive sporting development programme encompasses every aspect of school life, from high performance training to whole-school wellness initiatives.

  • We are transforming the historic Lower Field precinct with modern changing facilities, enhanced athletics infrastructure and upgraded basketball courts featuring purpose-built spectator areas.
  • Knowling Field will emerge as our premier multi-sport precinct, featuring two rugby/football fields and a full-size cricket field designed for seamless seasonal transitions, upgraded lighting systems with electronic scoreboards, and a purpose-built modern gymnasium overlooking the field and incorporating specialised rowing and golf simulation facilities.
  • The redevelopment of St Aidan’s Field will provide additional basketball courts, whilst our expanded aquatic programme will include learn-to-swim initiatives across all year groups.
  • An Indoor Cricket Centre will be built to ensure that the first sport ever played at the school will remain strong and vibrant, no matter the weather.
  • The Bedford Street tennis courts’ spectator amenities will be improved to enhance tournament experiences.
  • Our hockey astroturf facilities will feature a pavilion and comprehensive changing rooms and bathroom facilities.

BEYOND OUR BOUNDARIES
Our vision extends to

  • Settlers Dam, where upgraded rowing facilities with overnight accommodation will elevate our rowing programme.
  • New opportunities for participation and competition across a wider range of sports including lifestyle sports such as mountain biking, a sport ideally suited to our semi-rural setting.
  • Partnerships with local schools, clubs and communities to develop talent, foster connection and share facilities.
  • Inclusive community programmes that celebrate diversity and encourage lifelong involvement in sport.
  • Community Coaching Development Programmes based on our ability to attract world-class coaches to Makhanda.

Through sport, boys learn to lead, to serve and to belong. It is a vital part of our educational mission—and a powerful expression of our ethos.

Looking Ahead
As we shape the next chapter of Andrean sport, we do so with reverence for the past and excitement for the future. Our Sporting Promise is rooted in earthy excellence—drawn from the land and the people of the Eastern Cape and expressed in every boy who participates with courage and conviction.
