As St Andrew’s College approaches its 175th anniversary in 2030, we take this moment to reflect on our founding mission and to imagine our future. Bishop John Armstrong’s vision in 1855—to form young men of character and purpose—remains our guiding light. Vision 2055 is a long-range commitment to ensuring that this mission continues to flourish as we journey toward our bicentenary.
A World-Class, Independent, Termly Boarding School
We reaffirm our identity as a world-class, independent, termly boarding school. This model offers a full and immersive experience of learning, living and growing together. Boarding remains central to our ethos, providing the structure, relationships and rhythms that shape boys into grounded, resilient young men.

Our Anglican foundation continues to shape our values, commitments and relationships. It calls us to educate the whole person—mind, body and spirit—and to cultivate a community grounded in grace, humility and service. We are proud to be located in Makhanda, a city of rich cultural and educational heritage. Our place in this town is not incidental—it is formative. Makhanda’s spirit of resilience, diversity and intellectual life continues to shape our school’s identity and deepen our sense of belonging. More broadly, the Eastern Cape—its landscapes, its people and its quiet strength—grounds us in a deeper story. It is from this soil and soul that our ethos of earthy excellence has grown, and it is here that our mission continues to take root and flourish.
Our Co-Instructional Model with DSG
Our co-instructional model with the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) is a vital expression of our shared mission. Together, we offer a unique educational experience that enriches academic and social development while preserving the distinct identities of each school. This model allows boys and girls to learn alongside one another in senior grades, fostering mutual respect, collaboration and emotional intelligence.

We are committed to preparing boys for global citizenship, leadership and service. Over the next 30 years, we will expand our reach, deepen student success and remain a beacon of excellence and transformation in South Africa and beyond.

Character formation remains central to every boy’s journey. We will continue to nurture honesty, compassion, courage, humility and faith—values that endure beyond the classroom and shape lives of meaning and impact.
Deep Belonging in a Boarding Environment
We believe that every boy must feel known, supported and inspired to grow. Our boarder houses will evolve to offer varied layouts and social hubs, encouraging connection across age groups and creating spaces for reflection and retreat. Belonging is not incidental—it is designed.
Spaces that Shape Behaviour and Wellbeing
We know that space shapes behaviour. The built environment must support learning, wellbeing and belonging. Our Campus Masterplan will guide the transformation of our facilities—ensuring that every classroom, boarder house and outdoor zone reflects our commitment to inclusion, adaptability and emotional safety.
Vision 2055: A Generational Promise | Strategic Priorities for a Flourishing Future
This vision is not simply about buildings or programmes—it is about identity. It is about remaining true to our foundational values while responding boldly to the needs of a changing world. As we journey toward our bicentenary, we do so with gratitude for the past, hope for the future and a deep sense of responsibility to the land, the people and the mission that have shaped us. In realising our vision our Council and staff will link arms with our valued community of parents, past parents and Old Andreans.
Three strategic areas will guide our shared journey:
We will expand our scholarship and bursary programme—deepening access for sons and grandsons of Old Andreans and DSG Old Girls, and for boys from Eastern Cape farming families. This is a commitment to honouring legacy while opening doors. We will continue to seek out and support boys from diverse Eastern Cape backgrounds, ensuring that the transformative experience of a St Andrew’s education is available to those who will carry its values forward.
Alongside this, we will embark on a large-scale re-visioning of our campus. This includes boarder house upgrades, new sports facilities, a re-purposed Drill Hall and the creation of a new Arts, Cultural and Performing Arts Precinct. These developments will support a comprehensive educational experience and accommodate future growth. Our campus must reflect our ethos—welcoming, sustainable and responsive to the needs of our boys and staff.
Our educational partnership with the Good Shepherd School and its shared Anglican heritage is well established and we will grow our shared endeavour to uplift and invest in the educational life of our city. Through collaboration, resource-sharing and relational engagement, we aim to strengthen the broader ecosystem of learning in Makhanda and honour our role as a servant-hearted institution.
